NBU urges to refuse banknotes with holes and other damage
The National Bank of Ukraine warns of the danger of hryvnia banknotes deliberately damaged by banks during martial law from the territories under temporary occupation entering cash circulation. This is money stolen by the occupiers or looters from seized bank branches.
In accordance with the requirements of the law, bank managers, in order to render national currency banknotes non-payable or significantly damaged, ensure that they are mechanically damaged or damaged with a special solution. Possible ways of damaging banknotes include
- drilling banknotes with damage to one or two serial numbers with a drill with a diameter of 10 mm or more (drilling banknotes with several holes);
- cutting off at least 50% of the total area of the banknote and destroying it;
- cutting in half or into three parts;
- colouring with a special solution used in specialised devices for storing currency values / other colouring substances (solutions) with colouring of at least 50% of the total area of banknotes.
Please note that the Bank does not perform any transactions with damaged banknotes, these banknotes are not subject to exchange and are withdrawn for further inspection by the National Bank.
Be careful, check your cash! If you are offered a damaged banknote when making payments, it is better to refuse and ask for another one.
